The Challenge of Virtual Greens

Putting on a golf simulator has always been notoriously difficult.  Although golf simulation technology has improved significantly over the past few years, the lack of physical feedback and the difficulty in reading virtual greens make it hard to replicate the feel of real-life putting. However, some golfers have cracked the code, mastering the art of simulator putting. But how do they do it? Which putting method do they use?  In this blog, we will discuss the two most common types of putting methods on a golf simulator.

Two Techniques for Success on the Virtual Greens:

1. Putt straight toward the impact screen and adjust your start line on the screen

Some golfers prefer to aim straight into the impact screen and adjust the start line on the screen for the simulated break.  In the photo above, the putt is breaking from right to left.  You can see that the golfer has adjusted the start line to be right of the pin so that they can putt directly into the screen.

This method allows the golfer to keep a more consistent stroke since they are putting down the same physical line at all times.  This method generally takes a bit longer since the player needs to use the mouse or keyboard to adjust the start line.  This method is generally thought to be the "correct" method of putting on a simulator, but is it?

2. Leave the pin straight ahead and play the break

Others golfers like leave the pin directly ahead and putt to a different part of the screen as if playing real break.  In the photo above, the golfer has chosen to leave the pin straight ahead and will just putt the ball a little bit to the right to accomodate for the right to left break.  This method provides a more realistic putting experience and is generally quicker since no are required on the screen.

Which Technique is Better?

There's ongoing debate about which method is more effective. The answer often depends on the golfer's personal preferences such as if they are a technical putter or if they are a feel putter.  On a simulator, the method of putting straight into the screen will yield the most accurate data into your putting stroke.  Golfers will look for a "zeroed-out" start line and focus mainly on speed since they have already adjusted their aim on the screen.

The method of keeping the pin straight ahead and putting to a different part of the screen allows the golfer to play with more feel.  Although a launch monitor will accurately capture the launch conditions, the shot data will vary more.  In general, with this method, the golfer is not concerned about the shot data and is only looking to see if the putt went in or not.

Pro Tips

Skilled simulator golfers often emphasize the importance of consistent practice with a launch monitor. It's not just about replicating real-life conditions but also about understanding and refining the mechanics of your putting stroke.  One of the best benefits of using a Uneekor simulator to practice putting is the real time club view, and the data around your start line and ball speed.  By focusing on those two things, you can greatly improve the consistency of your putting stroke, which will eventually lead to a more confident putting stroke.

Conclusion

Putting on a simulator doesn't have to be a frustrating experience. With the right techniques and understanding of simulator data, golfers can turn this challenge into an opportunity for growth. Whether you're aiming straight or playing the break, the key is to practice purposefully, using technology to enhance your understanding and control of the putt.  Embrace the challenge, leverage the technology, and watch as your simulator putting transforms from a weakness into a strength.
